ISIS lost its last territory in March 2019, but it was not wiped out. On the day of the Iraq withdrawal, Fox News reported that thousands of ISIS fighters remain in Iraq and Syria and that the counter-ISIS campaign continues from Jordan and in Syria.
Operation Inherent Resolve, the anti-ISIS mission, began in 2014, not 2003. The 2003 war was Operation Iraqi Freedom. The Pentagon dated the campaign that ended on Sept. 30, 2026 as a 12-year mission.
